History of the Tall Pines Quilt Guild Scholarship Fund
The Mission of the Tall Pines Quilt Guild is “to foster appreciation of quilting and fine quilts, to increase knowledge of traditional and contemporary techniques of quilting, to provide an encouraging environment in which quilters can practice and exchange ideas, to educate the public as to the significance and history of quilting as an art form, as well as an ongoing craft, and to preserve this rich heritage of quilting for future generations." We are thrilled to support exceptional students who hold these same values.
The Tall Pines Quilt Guild of Huntsville, Texas began offering scholarships in 2007 to graduating seniors within our membership area. Initially there were two $500 scholarships offered. Scholarship awards have varied from $500 to $2,500, depending on the funding available. Scholarship awards are based on fund-raising activities and vary from year to year. Primarily our scholarships are funded by proceeds from the sale of tickets for our raffle quilt of the previous year which is lovingly designed and quilted by some talented volunteer quilt members. Thanks to all the ladies who have contributed to this endeavor from deciding on a design, selecting fabric, sewing and quilting the raffle quilt, selling tickets or participating in the selection committee. Special thanks to the members of the selection committee, but this is truly a total TPQG team effort and we all feel blessed to be able to contribute.
Private monetary donations are also accepted towards our scholarship awards. Memorial donations are acknowledged with handwritten notes to the families. Contact our treasurer Eileen Ramos or our scholarship chairman Linda Wetherell for donation information.
TPQG 2024 Scholarship Recipient, Miss Abby Wells
The Guild is pleased to award one of our $2500 scholarships this year to an admirable young senior from Montgomery, Texas.
She will be attending Texas A&M and Blinn College this semester with plans to major in Construction Science. She explained that her desire to pursue this field of study stems from her belief that it will benefit her community as the area grows by providing safe living structures, stable road systems, and fresh water supplies.
As a dedicated member of her church she also has a desire to serve on the mission fields of less privileged areas of the world to make a difference in not only the physical living conditions but also give her the opportunity to share her faith as a Christian.
She was president of Student Athletic Training for 2 years at Montgomery High School. She was also involved in several school organizations including the National Honor Society, Student council and received the Principal's distinguished Honor Roll award and the Girl Scouts Silver Award. She was a Girl Scout for 13 years
She ranked in the top 25% of her class and accumulated 30 hours of dual credits through her local college. She is a member of the school HOSA (Health Occupation Student Associate) and Psychology club.
She received a glowing letter of recommendation from her manager at Dutch Brothers who praised her humility, mentoring and work ethic.
Her other interests include pickle ball, swimming, crafting, reading and hiking.
Her volunteer experience included work at the Hamlin Food Bank, Encompass Health Rehab hospital and Lone Star Cowboy Childrens church.
Included in her application were photographs of a t-shirt quilt she made for her sister, an apron, a pillowcase and a cross stitch embroidery project.
"I promise to make an impact. I promise to be a hardworking productive part of society. I promise to contribute to making this earth a safe place. If you consider me for this scholarship I will not take it lightly. I would be honored and use it wisely. I will be a dedicated student with a goal in mind. That goal will be to be a person who helps, who cares and who makes an impact through my degree, my profession and my faith." - Abby Wells
TPQG 2023 Scholarship Recipient, Miss Kinley Waldrop
We celebrate another worthy recipient of the Tall Pines Quilt Guild 2023 Scholarship.
Applicants were rated on a scale of 1 to 5 in several categories including their Essay (subject of Where do you want to be in 5 years?), High School GPA and Community Service. Each applicant was required to submit 2 letters of recommendation and most importantly photos demonstrating proficiency in sewing.
The 2023 recipient of the $2500 Scholarship is from Willis High School.
While at Willis, the recipient served as the FFA Chapter President and was a member of the National Honor Society, Kats for Hope, the Drill Team and 4H club president. She spends some spare time cooking, baking and sewing. For the past 10 years, she has raised livestock for various projects. Some of her awards include a win in the Ft Worth Stock show/market for Goat Class and Texas State Fair Doe Class and Montgomery County Fair Grand Champion Market Goat in 2023. The recipients community service and volunteer work is impressive as well; 3 years at TLC Pantry Food drive, FFA back to school supply drive, Project Linus, Morgan Luttrell Intern, Local Nursing Home Christmas celebration, Willis High School Kats for hope which is a suicide awareness group. She also led various showmanship/livestock care clinics for local youth from 2019 through this year.
The committee was impressed by a comment from Willis High School's Associarte Principal who wrote an amazing letter of recommendation stating that our awardee quote, "Exemplifies high work ethic and knows where she wants to go in the future." The Montgomery County Extension Agent for A&M applauded her leadership abilities and service work within the community which he states was "second to none."
The recipients grandmother taught her to sew when she was 8 years old and crochet the year after. She learned to make pillows, pillow cases and such. I think many of us can relate to what she wrote in her essay when she said "Sewing gives me a creative outlet and I'm at peace at the machine and when I'm matching fabrics. She also was exposed to cooking and canning at a young age which is almost a lost interest these days. Her senior year was full of challenges, some personal and some academic, but she attributes her faith, her mom and support system for seeing her through. She graduated with a GPA of 4.32. Good Job!!!
With plans to attend Blinn College/Texas A&M in the fall, she will major in Animal Science. Her desire is to have a career in Animal Chiropractic.
It is our great privilege to introduce the 2023 Tall Pines Quilt Guild Scholarship Award winner, Ms. Kinley Waldrop.
