WALKER COUNTY FAIR QUILT SHOW


Official Rules – 2010

 

 

Objective: To promote and encourage the art and appreciation of quiltmaking and wearable art, to encourage excellence in quiltmaking by quilters and to educate the general public by providing an exhibition and competition to spotlight the work of Walker County quiltmakers. The show will reward excellence in design and craftsmanship through the presentation of awards based on qualified and impartial judging.

 

1.   Quilts entered must be pieced by WalkerCounty residents within the last three years.  No previously entered quilts nor antique quilts may be entered.

 

2.   Quilts will be judged in two divisions: Adult (age 19 and over) and Junior (children age 4 and over currently enrolled in a certified school program, public, private, or home school).

 

3.   Quilts may be appliquéd, pieced, embroidered, or a combination of quilting techniques.

 

4.    The quilts may be by an individual, two people, or a group of three or more. A quilt by an individual must have been pieced, quilted (either by hand or machine), and finished by an individual. A two person quilt is one that two people work on in the construction or finishing in any way. This includes quilting done for hire. A group quilt is one created by three or more people.

 

5.    Quilts will be divided into handquilting and machine quilting before being placed in judging categories: Hand quilting – to be entered in this category, quilting must be done by the person (or persons) entering the quilt. Machine quilting – entry form must reflect whether the quilting was done on a longarm machine (quilting by hire) or a regular sewing machine.

 

6.    Judging categories in both Adult and Junior Division will be:

 

A.        Wearable Art – All garment entries must consist of three layers and include quilting.

B.        Miniature quilt – Quilt must measure 24 inches or less on any side. Quilts should reflect reduced scale blocks no larger than 4 inches square.

C.        Wallhanging and Crib Quilt – Length + width must be no more than 100”.

D.        Small Quilt – Length + width must be no more than 150”

E.        Large Quilt: Three categories to be judged are:

(1)      Length + width must be no more than 165”

(2)      Length + width must be no more than 176”

(3)      Length + width must be no more than 192”

F.     Quilts from kits or block of the month s where color and design is predetermined.

 

7.  Quilts MUST be labeled in the bottom right corner of the back, and must include the name of the quilt maker (s). All garments must be labeled. The preferred label is fabric with the information clearly printed on the label. Clearly visible embroidery is acceptable.

 

8.       Each quilt measuring more than 24 inches MUST have a 4 inch finished, double casing (sleeve) sewn in the full width of the top edge of the quilt, securely stitched, top and bottom. Quilts measuring 24 inches or less MUST have a 2 inch casing. Quilts without a casing will not be accepted.

 

9.       A non-refundable entry fee of $5.00 per quilt/garment payable by U.S. check, money order, or cash must accompany the entry form.

 

10.    Entries should have a suggested category on the entry form; however, final category placement will be at the discretion of the judges.

 

11.    Quilts will be judged on the following: workmanship, construction, quilt stitches, amount of quilting, color selection, binding, and design.

 

12.    All entries, completed forms and fees will be checked in on Friday,  March 26, 2010 , between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Fabric Carousel, 1101 12th Street. All entries must be picked up between noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2010, in the main building at the Walker County Fairgrounds. Be sure to bring the “Receipt of Quilt” in order to pick up quilt and for entrance to fairgrounds at that time.
