Scholarship History

Tall Pines Quilt Guild began offering scholarships to graduating seniors within our membership area in 2007.  Initially there were two $ 500 scholarships offered: one for a student showing proficiency in sewing and one for a student intending to major in math education.

Proficiency in sewing was selected since we are a sewing organization whose purpose is “to foster appreciation of fine quilts and of quilting among both quilters and the public, to increase knowledge of traditional and contemporary techniques of quilting, to provide an encouraging environment in which quilters can practice and exchange ideas, to educate the public as to the significance and history of quilting as an art form as well as an ongoing craft, and to preserve this rich heritage of quilting for future generations.”

A major in math education was selected due to the extreme need for mathematics educators and because as quilters we utilize math in all our work.

In 2008 the amount of the each scholarship was increased to $ 750 and in 2009 each was increased to $ 1000.

In 2010 the Executive Board voted to retain the two existing scholarships at $ 1000 each and to add 5 additional scholarships aimed at teaching youth to quilt.

The Scholarship Committee at Tall Pines Quilt Guild retains control of the applications and the selection process to ensure that it is fair and equitable to all applicants.
