Glossary

Appliqué – a variety of techniques that all share the basic concept of one piece of fabric being applied to another

Airing of the Quilts – the Tall Pines Quilt Guild bi-annual outdoor quilt show that all guild members are expected to participate in and assist with staffing

Bee – a group that meets together to work on their own projects or group projects, assist bee members with quilting problems, chat, eat, and enjoy each other’s company

Block of the Month – a pattern, color and directions are selected by the Guild chairperson and announced to the Guild each month – members make blocks out of good quality fabric and turn in at the meeting – for each block entered the maker’s name is put in a drawing – the winner receives all of the blocks and a gift certificate for a future workshop if a project is completed with the blocks by the next meeting

Challenge – a contest where a theme and rulers are announced and some fabric selections are made for members – members construct a quilt out of their creative imagination

Charity Bee – a group open to all guild members that meets to make items to be donated to those in need in our community

Donation Quilt – quilt made bi-annually by Guild members to be given to the winner of a drawn, purchased ticket – all Guild members are expected to sell tickets

Door Prizes – small gifts awarded to meeting attendees by the drawing of a ticket

Fat Quarter – a quarter yard of fabric that is cut from the bolt differently so it yields the same square inches, but is a more usable piece of fabric – typically measures 18” x 22”

Fun Exchange – small gifts that are given out at guild meetings to the winners of drawn, purchased tickets – Guild members are expected to donate one prize per year

Hug – small quilt made by guild members to be donated to a local charitable organization for a child in need or distress

Paper Piecing – a piecing technique that uses a printed paper foundation to sew through and results in extremely accurate points and odd shapes

Piecing – creating a new piece of fabric from smaller pieces

Program – presentation at Guild meetings by renowned quilting experts or delightful hands-on projects presented by guild members

Quilt Guild – an organized group who are interested in learning and the advancement of quilting and textile arts

Refreshments – food provided at the Guild meetings by Guild members – all members are expected to participate at least once a year

Scholarship – funds provided by the Guild to graduating seniors from high school to assist them in furthering their education

Show and Tell – a time during our monthly Guild meetings for members to show their quilts and share them with guild members

Stitching in the Pines – workshops that are open to the public and to Guild members conducted by nationally famous quilting teachers bi-annually in conjunction with the Airing of the Quilts

Sunshine and Shadows – news about the health and family of Guild members

Trunk Show – a travelling show of one quilter’s work or antique quilt collection – typically presented as a program for a Guild meeting

UFO – “UnFinished Object”

Walker Caddy – a fabric holder that attaches to a walker that is made by a guild member to be given to residents of local nursing centers

Workshops – Guild sponsored classes taught by notable teachers that are for all guild members to enroll in to enrich their knowledge of a variety of quilting techniques
