Airing Of The QuiltsLadies in pioneer days brought their beloved quilts to Texas in covered wagons and lovingly cared for them as treasured possessions. Each spring, the ladies would “air” their quilts in the sunshine following long winter days and lots of usage. The practice of airing the quilts continues with the annual “Airing of the Quilts” held the first Saturday of May in historic downtown Huntsville. At the largest outdoor quilt show in Texas, visitors are able to see new and antique quilts, many of which are for sale. There is also a mini-quilt auction, a competitive quilt challenge, and unique items for sale. The “Airing of the Quilts” hopes to: Increase the public’s awareness and appreciation for the art form of quilting · Educate, encourage, and preserve the heritage and future of the art form of quilting · Provide an encouraging environment for quilters to showcase and share their creative endeavors In conjunction with the display of beautiful quilts on Saturday, “Stitching in the Pines” workshops feature nationally known quilters presenting unique workshops for area quilters. The workshops are held on Friday prior to the Airing and the Monday following the Airing. The Tall Pines Quilt Guild holds a bi-annual fundraiser to support our many donations to local charity groups. Members work together to create a Donation Quilt that is awarded during a drawing on the day of the Airing. |
